Poets at Hope

Poetry can be a wonderful art form for personal expression. Here at Hope we have a poetry class where clients of different verbal and cognitive abilities are given the opportunity to express themselves in words, many or few. Students often find hidden feelings and ideas that they may have never verbalized or even thought of. It assists them in delving deeper into their own lives and can give them interesting insights into others while exploring the world of words. Here are a few examples of work that came from the poetry class this last year.

My Mother's Hands

are soft and pink
touched by rain
like the roses in the garden of Kew.

Cathy Acton spoke about her feelings when she wrote this poem:
"I was feeling nostalgic with love for my mom and was remembering her as a teacher. For years she taught Kindergarten even before I was born. I thought about her impact on her little students as future adults."

Amy says: "I have never been to India, I was just thinking about it a lot. Whenever I think of it, it is beautiful."

In the poetry class the students are exposed to many different styles and authors to assist them in working prompts. They listen to poetry, discuss poetic works and dialogue with the instructor on imagery and sensory visualizations. Poetry can be transporting and imaginative, evocative and cathartic. Our poets hope you enjoyed their work and look forward to more.

Hope University presents it's annual Christmas Show for 2011 titled 'Christmas by Candlelight'. This program is one of Hope's yearly highlights and this year we were underwritten by several generous donors to be able to use the historic Plummer Auditorium in Fullerton California. Any and all students who choose to perform are included in the program. This is a wonderful opportunity for Hope to showcase the students many talents. We have a hand bell choir, a singing choir, a men's choir group the Hi-Hopes musical group. There is a drama group, the sign language group and several dancing groups who all were able to have a part in the show. Halloween fell on a Monday this year and the students of Hope University had some fun. Our annual Halloween party was a hit to be sure. There were spooky snacks, 'bobbing' for chocolate covered pretzels, paper hat making, face painting, a 'pumpkin walk', a costume parade and of course, lots of dancing! This week the students of Hope University are took several small groups on a field trips to Integrity House in Santa Ana California. We had lunch with them, enjoyed the hallway art gallery and admired our beautiful mural which was created in tandem with that program. Students, staff and volunteers from Hope University all collaborated in creating the mural on the outside of the Integrity House building. It incorporates drawings, paintings and mosaics of the students art work. Whimsical and representational as well as some portraits of the clients at Integrity House. We enjoyed veggie burgers, french fries, salad, apples slices and lentil soup, all of which were prepared by the staff and clients at Integrity House.
On the dedication addition to the mural it states:
Trees represent a place of shelter.
Flowers represent the blossoming of a person.
Birds represent the ability to soar beyond other peoples expectations.
All of these are true about both programs and the students and clients who attend them.
They find shelter and understanding with peers and staff at their programs.
They blossom as people, friends, family members and productive members of society.
They often soar well beyond all expectations put upon them by society and even themselves!
All so very true, and so much can be learned from them and their amazing ABILITIES!

The Hope University students have been hard at work all year producing product for sale at our annual Holiday Program. Along with classes in art, music, computer, dance, math, reading and geography they also make lovely items to raise money for the school. Here you see several new items added this year by our amazing and talented students. The staff at Hope University strives to cultivate and inspire their clients and help bring out their talents and abilities for all to see, appreciate and share.

Instructor Lisa LoRusso teaches a class called 'Sound'. Some of our students have perfect pitch, limited auditory ability, limited vocal ability and difficulty with sound moderation. This class offers options for these barriers and creates an arena to explore sound, movement and art. Some of the ways sound is explored in this class are movement correlations to vowel sounds, which helps to center and focus auditory input and spacial awareness. Another favorite medium are the boom whackers, brightly colored tubes which you 'whack' to create deep resonating sounds that change with the tubes size. These create a relationship between sound, color and vibration making it an auditory, visual and tactile sound experience. Another activity is body movement to objects. Making shapes with the body and vocalizing paired words such as 'sun' while moving the arms big and round like the sun, and 'moon' while creating a crescent shape with the arms. Clients work in a parallel format as well as in a circle to create individual and group spaces that encourage body, space and auditory awareness.

In August we had a guest artist come to Hope University. His name is Tom Walker and his medium is metal. He makes sculptures both large and small using metal to create his art. Tom brought with him some rolls of wire which he cut into smaller lengths. Each student was given a length of wire with which to work. He showed the students some examples of shapes to make, like a pair of glasses or a bicycle and talked about how to work with the wire. It looks almost like sketching in three dimensions! The students really enjoyed working with the wire and having a guest artist come to teach is such a treat! We are all very thankful to Tom and hope he can come back again to help us create more art.

A Visit From The Mayor!

Hope University Board President Matt Sauer, Hope University Executive Director Jan Reyes and The Mayor of Anaheim Tom Tate.

The Mayor of Anaheim, Tom Tate, came by Hope University for a visit in August. He had been invited to the Mural Unveiling but was unable to attend though he promised to come by the program and visit with us all on another day. He kept his promise and we were all so excited to see him. The Hi-Hopes performed for him and he was able to see the students hard at work on art projects, exploring music and in academic classes. The students were able to shake his hand and show him around the classrooms here at Hope U. It made us so proud that Mayor Tate made time in his busy schedule for us. We really appreciate his interest in our program. We are looking forward to seeing him and more of his staff soon. Mayor Tate was so impressed by us that he brought his wife down the next day and meet us. Thank you Mayor Tate!

The Hope University students loaded onto a bus for a quick jaunt down to the Orange County Museum of Art where there is currently an exhibit of Alexander Calder's work. Alexander Calder was a kinetic artist, he loved to make sculptures that moved. The bus moved the students to the museum where they were moved by his amazing work. Alexander Calder often used red, white, blue, green and yellow when creating his sculptures. He also made many mobiles that balance unbelievably. The museum had an interactive section where the students were able to create art themselves. They cut folded paper into shapes and added to an already in progress yarn sculpture. So many of Hope University's students are actively involved in creating artwork daily so this field trip was an amazing inspiration.

On July 20th many of the Hope University students attended the Orange County Fair at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa California. Each year the O.C. Fair provides a day, called 'Friends of the Fair' Day where persons with disabilities get in free. We are so grateful to the O. C. Fair for providing this service for us all. The theme of the Fair this year was 'Let's Eat!' celebrating all of the wonderful Fair foods we love. The students and staff rode in a chartered bus to and from the Fair. Some of the things we saw were, rides, horses, sunflowers, vendors selling all sorts of things and food, lots of food!
Everyone had a lot of fun and can hardly wait to go back again next year. Thank you Orange County Fair for having 'Friends of the Fair' Day.

Mural Unveiling!

On Saturday, July 30th 2011 from 2:00 to 6:00 pm we will be hosting the Integrity House Mural Collaboration Unveiling. Everyone is invited to this exhibition and opening reception at Integrity House, 2043 North Broadway, Santa Ana California 92706.
The Integrity House Mural was created by the artists of Hope University, specifically for the members of Integrity House. After a collaborative design process, about 40 Hope University artists, 20 volunteers, 3 Integrity House members and several Hope University staff members worked together to complete the Mural.

Artists from Hope University and Integrity House worked together to create this large, amazing work of art. The images were taken from client artworks and transferred onto the building to be brought to life through paint and ceramic mosaic. Here a picture truly tells a story of ability and acceptance.
Parking is available in adjacent lot and lot directly across the street on Saturdays only.
There will be refreshments and a performance by the renowned Hope University band, The HiHopes. The exhibition runs from July 30th through September 30th. Viewing hours after the opening are 10:00am to Noon and 3:00pm to 5:00pm Monday through Friday. Parking is available only in rear lot of Integrity House.

The Segerstrom Center for the Arts Teach Program provides a wonderful array of dance, music and drama programs for educational facilities. We have had several of them perform for us. In June we were treated to a duo called 'Catch Me Bird'. They are a married couple who dances together. Their choreography reflects the love, conflict and humor associated with many relationships. In their dance piece they incorporated several props, such as a table, chairs, napkins and two large double ringed objects. With these double rings they invited a few students onto the stage and made them part of the dance! We loved having the guest performers and we think they liked us a lot too!

Six of Hope University's artists had their work chosen by the VSA to be included in their 'Arts on the Move Traveling Art Exhibit'. Out of these six pieces, three were selected to be a part of the 'Laguna Beach 'Festival of the Arts', Junior Art Exhibition'. All six of these will be on display at the festival from July 3rd through August 31st. We hope you can attend the Festival of the Arts in Laguna Beach to enjoy the show and see our students work in person.
Here we have all six artworks and photos of the three featured artists. The work spans several mediums from computer to block printing. Each of these pieces was created by the student in art classes at Hope University where the art teachers strive to expand the clients abilities and options tailored to the individual.

After the Hope University students performed at the Westfield Mall in Santa Ana there was an art show that remained for all to view. One of the Hope U students' favorite field trips of the year is the one to the mall to view the art. We all love going out into the community and enjoying a day of walking about, window shopping and eating lunch in the food court.
Several Hope University students had their artwork chosen to go on the traveling exhibit. Crystal Serna, Miguel Aldaz, Sharon Mauck, Tanette Tuttle, Chris Friedman and Lori Slikker will all have art 'on the move' with the traveling exhibit.
All of the students love going to the mall. Some of their favorite things to do and see are:

In April the VSA had their annual event at the Westfield Main Place Mall in Santa Ana California. There was art on display by clients and students from around Orange County. Hope University was represented by several visual artists, poets, musicians, singers and dancers. The Hope University Choir performed along with the Hi-Hopes and the Hope University Dance class. The art is on display currently. The students and staff of Hope U will be going on field trips to view the art work, so look for the blog posts about the field trips!

Several art pieces were chosen for a traveling show as well. Hope University artists will have their work on display across the continent.

An 'Open House' was held at Hope University's Anaheim location on Wednesday, April 13th. We welcomed students, parents, prospective students, guests, board members and donors to come. The turn out was wonderful, we enjoyed showing our program to many people, some familiar and some new. Each instructor had examples of the work created or done in their classes. There were demonstrations of block cutting and printing, knitting with needles and a circle loom, interactive computer programs and self advocacy. We had on display many items from classes such as poetry, mosaic, math, reading, literature, paintings, drawings, felt making, and others for all to see. The attendees were entertained by the Hi-Hopes, Fred Mezzo on the accordion, the handbell choir and Joanna Buon-Cristiani on the piano. Those who wanted to shop were treated to a showing of our boutique items, all made by the students here at Hope.
A student recounts her experience at the Open House, by Lori Slikker:
"When we had our Open House here at school, I was asked to come and show my knitting skills. I was more than happy to do it! A little girl came over to where I was sitting and asked me to teach her how to knit. I was really happy to teach her. She picked it up really fast and I had a big smile on my face. Even my knitting teacher was impressed with how I was able to be a knitting teacher here at the Open House."
All of the staff was very proud of the students who attended and performed that evening.

Hope University offers many classes. Here we have some photos of students in two of them, watercolor and reading. Hope offers many different art classes for students of varying levels. One of the students in this watercolor class is sight impaired. He uses his hands to find the water in which to dip his brush and then feels for the color pots. His macular degeneration is progressive but he still has some sight. Ben says that he loves working with watercolors because he can touch and see the colors. Michelle enjoys choosing subject matter and using the watercolors to paint what ever she feels like that day.
The three readers are enjoying copying the words as they say them. This helps with sounding out and letter recognition. They all look so happy sharpening their reading skills don't they?

      Tanette Tuttle is the Hope University artist chosen for the month of March's 'Artist of the Month'. The artist of the month is honored by having their work hung in the gathering hall for all to see. Their name is prominently posted above their work and they also receive a certificate. The students at Hope U are always happy to see who is chosen. This month it is Tanette Tuttle. Tanette love to work with pen and ink, colored pencils and water colors. Some of her favorite subjects to draw are penguins and Orca Whales. She loves to go to Sea World in San Diego, to observe her subjects in person.
     When asked about what she likes about penguins Tanette's response was, "I just love penguins so much, I like to see them swim and wobbly walk."
     Many students here share her love of aquatic animals. They are very fun to see!

Earlier in this blog we showed you photos of the mural going in at Integrity House in Santa Ana California. Well, work has not stopped on this amazing project. Now the students have finished the painting phase and have moved on to the mosaic addition. All of the artwork used in the mural was student and Integrity House consumer generated. This has been a wonderful collaboration of efforts from both facilities as well as countless volunteer hours. Here are two blog posts, one showing the mural's painting phase and the other is of only some of the volunteers who have given so much of their time in this project. We are hoping to have the mural completed by the summer of 2011. There will be a grand unveiling and reception to honor this artistic achievement.
The students are so excited about the mural, seeing their artwork on this large of a scale is so validating.

On Thursday, February 24th, Hope University honored last year's volunteers with a Volunteer Appreciation Celebration.
The Hi-Hopes performed, the Hand Bells and Chimes were rung, the Choir, Glee and Ensemble classes and the Drama class performed. We recognized our volunteers with a gift and many 'thank yous'.
Mr. and Mrs. Blackburn spoke to us about helping at the mural, Nick Latimer, a board member, told us of the fun he is having here as a volunteer and the board president, Matt Sauer, spoke about his experiences with our program.
We do appreciate our many volunteers and hope to see many more in 2011.

A Puppet Show!

Cooperative behavior can get you good rewards as Frank has found out. He has a card in his wallet for the instructors to sign after each class, when his card is full he gets to put on a puppet show. Well, today was the day for Frank's special show. He brought his puppet, some fun music and had some help from the student audience to help his show along. Frank looks so happy as he performs for us and enjoys his time on the stage. The students also win as they have some time to relax and enjoy the show. As we strive for acceptance and joy here at Hope University, everyone benefits.

On Monday, February 14th Hope University had a Valentine’s Day party and dance. The students spent the morning decorating the hall with paper chains and colored hearts. After lunch the party began. There was dancing, fun and frolic sweetened by two beautiful Valentine’s day cakes provided by student Katie Foote’s family. We had two student DJ’s, Tom V.and Darren P. Tom brought his own equipment and music to thrill the crowd and Darren assisted in music choices and announcements. They really added that special spark to the party!

Here we have some photos of Hope U student, Darren P. He is showing us his large sculpture of a helicopter. Darren's favorite medium is cardboard and masking tape. He creates his large sculptures over a wooden frame and includes electronics. He likes to do the wiring and circuits so he can see things light up and move. Darren has created many sculptures, one being the 'Robot' which we use in the 'Beau Monde Float' performances. Darren's abilities are explored here at Hope U. with visual art as well as the written word. He has written several poems, including 'Cleaning up the Drive-Thru at Taco Bell' featured in the 'Very Special Arts' exhibition and the CORE 6 show.

The students of Hope University performed beautifully at their annual Holiday program titled 'Comin' Up Christmastime'. There was square dancing and sign language, poetry, bells and so much more. Every student had a part in this beautifully performed show. There are DVD's of the show available if you would like one, please call the school (714) 778-4440 to get your copy. The students did an amazing job and fun was had by all. We had our famous boutique of handmade items produced by the students in the lobby of the theater and sales were brisk. The talent shown by this population is inspiring and must be seen to be believed.
Some of the highlights of the show were the bell choir playing traditional holiday music. The dance class performing a magical snow scene and the drama classes wonderful addition of holiday humor! At The Laundromat

Margaret makes good use of her time by knitting while the laundry washes.

Life skills class takes the dirty laundry to the laundromat. We go every Thursday to wash our clean up towels. We also launder some of our performance outfits and bell table covers. The laundromat is nearby and a great experience for the students to learn how to wash clothes, operate the washers and dryers as well as navigate in a a public facility. Life skills are often overlooked with this population and with classes like this they can feel empowered and confident that they know how to take care of different aspects of their own care. They learn how to set the washer, measure detergent, load the washer and use the 'money card' to activate the machine. Then, after the washer is finished they unload it and move the wet laundry to the dryers where they reload the laundry into the dryer and set it to dry. Lastly they unload the dryer and take the clean laundry to the tables, fold it and pack it to go back to Hope. While learning how to do laundry they also must navigate the laundromat space and be appropriate with the other patrons using the facility. The students are enjoying the laundromat experience, feeling more independent and being out in the community.

We have some new additions to our Hope University Boutique inventory. They are beautiful felt earrings and necklaces made by the students in Lisa's Felting Class. There are wonderful colors and textures in these unique pieces of wearable art. Here we have some photos of hand felted earrings. These and so many more items will be featured at our boutique on the night of the Christmas Program, information to the left in the 'Upcoming Events' box. Halloween at Hope U.

Hope University's Halloween party was a blast! Fun was had by all. We were treated to a puppet show, put on by student Frank Luna with an improvisational performance assisted by Miguel Aldaz. There was a costume contest and parade, a doughnut eating contest followed by a dance with music DJ'd by Hope U's very own spinning DJ, Tom Veltman.

Exquisite Creatures

In November several of our students' artwork will be featured at a show entitled 'Exquisite Creatures'. This show takes a spin on the art form of 'Exquisite Corpse'. This show will be held at the George V. Daneff Gallery, 3962 N. Studebaker road. # 206, Long Beach CA, 90808. The opening reception will be on Nov. 5th, 6:00 to 8:00 pm and the show will run until January 25th, 2011.

Beau Monde Float Fotos

Our last performance of Beau Monde Float was amazing and beautiful. Here we have a few photos from that performance. You see Karen as 'Eternity' meeting the Robot. Her costume was created by the students and staff from paper sculpture, crochet, yarn and painted tubes. Karen looks so serene as she holds the Earth in her arms and meets the Robot face to face.
We also have a wonderful photo of the stage with the Hand Bell Choir playing. The students of Hope University practice twice a week to perfect their hand bell techniques. It can be quite magical to hear them play.
'Everybody is a Parade' was punctuated by over sized paper sculptures, created by the students, like this one of a butterfly. Richard, Mikki, Cathy and Tom sing the accompanying song as Frank, Rene and Karen bring in the parade.

Three Day Weekend!

This coming weekend is a holiday, we are off on Monday for Columbus Day. The Hope U students are excited to have an extra day to do with as they please. Here we have some students having fun on field trips, to the mall and the Orange County Fair. Beau Monde Float, A Beatiful Success!

All of the hard work and day long rehearsals certainly paid off for the students of Hope University, Saturday, September 25th at the Plummer Auditorium in Fullerton California.
The show was amazing, the students were all shining stars on the stage.

Disability Spotlight ...PKU

What is PKU? By Virginia E. Schuett, MS, RD, Director, National PKU News

PKU (phenylketonuria), in its “classic” form, is a rare, inherited metabolic disease that results in mental retardation and other neurological problems when treatment is not started within the first few weeks of life. When treatment is begun early and well-maintained, affected children can expect normal development and a normal life span. (Not all elevations of blood phenylalanine require treatment; any child with a level less than 6 mg/dl does not need to be on a special diet and is not risk for mental retardation.) Until recently, the only treatment was a very strict diet that limits the amino acid, phenylalanine. Now, however, there is a drug called Kuvan that can help in some cases.

One of the students at Hope University has PKU. Her name is Cathy Acton. Cathy has an amazing singing voice, many have likened her to Barbara Streisand or Patsy Cline. She has been performing since the '70s. She is one of the lead singers in the Hope University Group, The Hi-Hopes.

Having PKU means that Cathy has to eat differently from people without the disease. She cannot have steak, a cheeseburger, chicken or fish. So she follows a strict vegetarian diet. Some of her favorite allowed foods are corn on the cob, her Mother's cooking and broccoli slaw with ramen noodles.

Cathy enjoys singing, knitting, crocheting, acting, traveling and reading books about the British Royals.
She is currently working on a recording called 'Cathy Celebrates England' a CD of songs that were either sung by British artists or written by British composers. Some of the songs on the CD will be 'Yesterday', 'I Could Have Danced All Night' and 'Feed the Birds'.

Having PKU and adhering to the diet have been difficult at times for Cathy, fortunately with the latest research a pill has been created to help those with PKU to be able to eat more foods with protein. Kuvan was developed by the pharmaceutical company Biomarin.

Cathy sure has not let her disability slow her down! She has traveled to England, Wales, The Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Mexico and Canada. She loves to travel and hopes to do much more in her future. Scotland may be next on her list!

Her favorite color is purple and she loves to go to tea houses for tea and scones. She had her last birthday party at 'Paris in a Cup' at the circle in Old Towne Orange Ca.

Cathy's philosophy is "Don't let anything stand in your way." Cathy sure has not let anything stand in her way, and we look forward to many more performances from her.

Students Rehearse for Beau Monde Float

Beau Monde Float is coming up fast! The staff and students of Hope U are rehearsing dances, arranging music and making sets and costumes. Here we have Marvin Castillo playing a traditional Djembe drum, which is used in the opening drum circle pictured. Next are staff, guest artists and students working together on the electronic sound effects. This performance has complex sound and visual components coordinated through laptop computers. The music is evocative and haunting. The visuals are a compilation of student artwork, movement and sounds. An origional score was created by the guest artists from MLuM. The sets were designed, knitted, painted and sculpted by the students at Hope University. The performace is interactive and audience participatory. A wonder to behold! We hope that you will join us for this one of a kind show that will delight your eyes and your heart.

One Night Only Beau Monde Float!

Beau Monde Float is back for one night only! If you missed this amazing performance last year you will not want to miss it this month. Have you ever wondered about 'beauty'? What does it mean? Who is beautiful? What is beautiful? How is it different for different people? How about people with different abilities? What does it look like? How does it sound?
Beau Monde Float, Thirteen Six Views of Sound Beauty may just answer some of these questions and possibly raise several more! This performance is a poignant and passionate celebration of the vitality of the human spirit and the beauty in us all.
Developed through a collaboration between Hope University and the artist group MLuM, Beau Monde Float, Thirteen Six views of Sound Beauty is a profoundly moving experience that takes audiences on a journey exploring the nature of Beauty.
About this original sound and performance art production, Director Marco Schindelmann says, "It doesn't have a narrative. It does not have to be understood, but should simply be experienced. In our culture, people frequently expect to be instructed by 'a greater will' as to what to think, what to buy, what to expect, how to live, etc. Beau Monde Float is about making connections that are personal and not based on outside expectations. Beau Monde Float hopes to present a world in which people create their own personal mythologies and entertainments. It is a dream parade, an aesthetic circus, mystical vaudeville or whatever else the spectator-auditor imagines it to be"
This piece is truly an experience and the Hope University students have created a dream world of beauty to be enjoyed by all. We hope you can attend this performance of Beau Monde Float as it is a celebration which shows us that beauty is and is not always in the eyes of the beholder.

Hope Handbags

Hope University creates items for sale at our boutique shows and performances. We have a wide array of items ranging from refrigerator magnets to original linoleum block prints. We also have a Cafe Press Shop where you can custom order or choose from items already on display, made from Hope U student artwork. Our most recent addition to the Hope University Boutique is the Hope Handbag! We are very excited about his new item. Each one is as unique as the creator, and the magic happens....in the washer!
Here is the information found on the tag added to each bag.
"The Hope Handbag, Wicked Fun Wool Felt Bags". 'Felted or "fulled" wool bags are created by knitting the bag with wool yarn on large needles, then shrinking the bag to the desired size. Due to the differences in wool, and the shrinking process, each bag is unique. The knit on this bag is very dense, sturdy and easy to care for. Just hand was in cool wash in cool water and then air dry.'

CORE 6 : Defining Ourselves

CORE 6 is a juried art exhibit by artists with disabilities.
The 6th annual CORE exhibit is sponsored by Arts and Services for Disabled, Inc. and the National Arts and Disability Center of UCLA. In it's 6th year, CORE continues to extend its reach to artists nationally and worldwide. The exhibit showcases artwork, literature, and performances by artists with disabilities with the purpose of providing a space for artists, community members, and arts and disability advocates to build common bonds and promote visibility through a diverse art forum. See our 'upcoming events' box on the right for dates, times and venue.
Several Hope University students will be having their work showcased at CORE 6. We are happy to see literature included in this years CORE exhibit. Here we have three Hope University student poems composed in poetry class.

Awards and Honors for Hope University Students

Tammy Grant and Christie Cook Get An Award at the Laguna Beach Festival of the Arts.
For the past two years, the Laguna Beach Festival of the Arts has selected from work displayed for the Very Special Arts Festival, artworks to be included in their Junior Art Exhibition. This year, works by five Hope University artists were chosen. The artists were: Joanna Buon-Cristiani, Miguel Aldas, Margaret Kelley, Christie Cook and Tammy Grant. One of the Artworks selected won an award, it was a linoleum block print by Tammy Grant that was cut by Christie Cook. It is a portrait of Marge and Homer Simpson entitled, "Marge and Homer".

Arts and Services for the Disabled, Inc. partnered with REMO Drums for their first ever ArtBeat for Humanity National Exhibit. The exhibit attracted artists with disabilities from throughout the nation to participate in this Juried Art Exhibit. Among the jury members from the music, art and wellness community, was Mickey Hart, drummer for the Grateful Dead and Joe Lamond, president/CEO of the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM). This exhibit showcases original artwork on REMO buffalo or frame drums by artists with disabilities, with the purpose of providing a forum for this ancient form of artistic expression, utilizing the drum head as a unique canvas. Thus building common bonds through a shared goal to promote artistic talent, community inclusion and diversity.

Hope University submitted two drums and both were accepted into the show. Each drum features artwork by two artists. One drum has the artwork of Chih Tseng and Tammy Grant.

The other has the artwork of Joanna Buon-Cristiani and Sharon Mauck, this drum won 2nd place! Congratulations to Joanna and Sharon!

Orange County Fair Field Trip

Every year the Orange County California Fair has a special day for some very special people, called 'Friends of the Fair' Day. The Hope University students left in a bus on Wednesday, July 21st for a day of Fair fun, food and friends. They went on rides, like the big Ferris Wheel and were able to see many sights. The livestock area was a favorite, with cows, pigs and chickens, also the farm area where they have many different kinds of fruits and vegetables growing year round on the Fairgrounds. Students were also able to do some shopping and as always, lunch down food alley was an adventure. The Hi-Hopes, Hope University's musical performing group played on the big stage to the delight of many.

Very Special Arts Festival Westfield Main Place, Santa Ana, CA

Westfield Main Place, Santa Ana California hosted the annual Very Special Arts Festival for artists with disabilities. The Hope University Choir sang and the Chiming group chimed at the performance event. Her we have a flamingo block print done by Hope U student Lori Slikker. She drew the image and carved 3 different linoleum blocks to create this amazing image. Next is Dena Schott (Cerebral Palsy) shown beaming next to her water color and ink painting titled 'Dream'. This was the first year that the written word was included in the show. Here we have a very proud Chih Tseng standing next to his poem, 'At Henry's', a haircut experience.

Beau Monde Float Preparations

Hundreds of colored tubes, miles and miles of yarn and much concentration are going into the sets for our performance piece Beau Monde Float. The students of Hope University and MLuM together created a one of a kind art performance of music, dance and sculpture. We performed it on September 19th, 2009. The positive response was overwhelming so we will be having an encore performance September 25th, 2010 at the Plummer Auditorium located at 201 E. Chapman Ave, Fullerton CA, 92832. Free parking is available in the parking structure diectly across the street form the theater. We are all very excited about this opportunity to showcase the diverse talents of the students of Hope University and we hope that you can attend! Painting A Mural!

The students of Hope University have teamed up with the clients at Integrity House in Santa Ana California. Students and clients from both facilities created artwork to be used on the exterior walls of Integrity House. It was then put together in collage fashion and made larger. They then drew it on the walls and are now filling it in with color. There is also a section of mosaic! Here are some photos of the mural, Hope U students, parents and Integrity house clients working together to create an amazing piece of art on the exterior walls of the Integrity House building.

Very Special Arts Showcases Hope U Student Art

In April we were proud to participate in the Very Special Arts Festival in Orange County California at the Westfield Main Place. Hope University Students performed for the crowd along with many other talented persons with disabilities. Several of our students' art work was chosen for the traveling show as well as one piece was used and the artist honored with a tee-shirt design for the Very Special Arts! Tanette, we are so proud of you and your wonderful 'puppy' block print.
Then in May the students were able to take a field trip to the mall to view the art on display. We also had a wonderful day window shopping and enjoying a special lunch in the food court.

Field Trip to the Queen Mary in Long Beach

On August 25th, 2008, Monday, we went on a field trip to the Queen Mary in Long Beach California. It was a perfect day for a field trip to the water. The boat is amazing and huge! Did you know that the Queen Mary is TWICE the size that the Titanic was? Well it's true. We were able to go on a guided tour of the ship and we learned a lot about her. One of our favorite places on the ship was the 'Winston Churchill' suite. It was very big and had great closets! The wood in the ship is just beautiful. The tour guide told us that there were over 50 different types of wood used in the interior of the ship. Here are some photos of us on our field trip. One is of Jim standing in front of the Queen Mary, another is of Cathy and Paul in front of an English phone booth and there is a wonderful photo of Jim, Cesar, Michael and Darren getting ready go up the gang way into the ship. You can see what a beautiful sunny day it was. After visiting the ship we went to a picnic area near The Aquarium of the Pacific for lunch. We were right by the water and were able to watch harbor cruise boats and pelicans come and go. It was a great day.

You Are Invited To A CD Release Party!

You won't want to miss this event. We are hosting a CD Release Party at Steamers Jazz Cafe in Fullerton California to celebrate the completion of the newest Hi Hopes CD. This CD features Paul Kuehn a lead singer in the band. Paul is a musical savant, he is blind and developmentally disabled. Paul was selected for feature on this CD, not only because of his vocal talents, but because he is the reason the band was formed and the Hi Hopes program was developed. This year the band celebrates it's 36th anniversary.
You are invited to attend this exciting event on Saturday, August 16th, at 2:00pm. You will hear Paul and the Hi Hopes perform music from their new CD. Copies of the CD will be for sale, along with other Hi Hopes merchandise. Admission is $5.00 at the door. Funds raised at this event will go to support Hope University.

Music and Learning

On Tuesday, March 4th, we had a visit from Terrance Laine of Creative Percussion from the Orange County Performing Arts Center. Terrance has many different percussion instruments, several are from around the world and many he has made himself. As he played them he showed us how to make different sounds with each one and gave us fun ideas for making our own percussion instruments. He surprised us with the objects he used to make music, such as an animal jaw bone and a dogs water dish! Several of the students were able to participate on stage and try their hand at creating music through percussion. We learned a lot from Terrance, you can see Cindy H. and Jason R. on stage with him using an interesting instrument made from a gardening tine. Ron L's face says it all as he joins in with his special Alaskan drum.

Here is an example of one of our students art work. April R. loves color and uses them in this acrylic on canvas to express her vibrant nature. Also we have another student, Ben S. working on a piece in colored pencil. He just could not hold back that smile. All of the students are looking forward to the Valentine's Day party and dance tomorrow.

Holiday Party at Hope

On December 20th, we had a holiday party at Hope U. We had dancing, a special lunch and a visit from Santa Claus! Here is Margaret K. helping out in the kitchen with lunch. Shadow F. also wanted to do kitchen duty and Carol R. is just very happy that we are having a party.

Hope U Talent Showcased

In September Hope University had a fall Talent Showcase. There were singers and dancers, guitar and violin players, we had a fashion show, a drama skit and so much more. Here we can see Mikki, Lori, Cindy and Cathy performing a drama piece. Our drama teacher Shelley RuggThorp has been helping the students with improvisation and projection.
Next is a sampling of items from our Hope U boutique. You can see cards with original student
artwork, colorful hand sewn pincushions both made in teacher Michele Vavonese's art classes and hand knitted items from teacher Sandra D. Carter's knitting classes all for sale. Also in the Talent Showcase we had a fashion show to showcase some of the hand made items available in our boutique. You can see Cindy wearing a hat that she knitted herself and a scarf knitted by another student. Karen is wearing a matching T-shirt and tote decorated with our students original hand carved linoleum block prints. The show as a great success!

Something Fishey for Hope University

Frank L. and Michael M. wave to us from inside the walk-through fish tank at the Cabrillo Beach Aquarium. We went there on a field trip Tuesday, August 14th. There was so much to see we all wished that we had more time to visit the fish. There were picnic tables at the beach so we had our lunch right by the water. It was so beautiful there. Cindy H. was sea-ing stars! She could not believe how colorful they are. A whale skeleton impressed Isela E. The Cabrillo Museum is located at Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro California. We had fun there and hope to go back.

Getting to the Getty

We had a wonderful time visiting the Getty museum in Los Angeles on July 26th. A big tour bus picked us up and drove us to the museum. From the parking lot we rode on a tram up the hill to the museum. There were trees and you could see the city down the hill. Here is Karen L. at the Getty with the view behind her. The students favorite thing at the Getty was the giant 'Uberorgan' by Tim Hawkinson that hangs in the main hall. It makes music/noise at the hour. It sounds like a sqeaky organ or even a bagpipe!

It is a very nice place with many things to see. We wished that we had more time to spend there looking at all of the art.

Cowabunga! At The Orange County Fair

Hope U Bowls Them Over!

Several Hope Univeristy students went to Sacramento to compete in the California National Bowling Championships. Margaret K. and Richard G. 's team came home with 1st place trophies!
Margaret and Richard brought them in to school to share their accomplishments with the students and staff. We are all very proud of all the bowlers who went to Sacramento to compete. Margaret and Richard sure look happy with their 1st place trophies!

Art And Fun At The Mall

The Very Special Arts Gallery Show in the Santa Ana Main Place Mall. Hope University has several students showing their work. We also had two pieces chosen for the traveling show. All of the students were able to take a field trip to the mall to see their own and their fellow students work in display.

Hope U Performs at Main Place Mall!

On Saturday, April 21st a selection of Hope University students performed for Very Special Arts at the Santa Ana Main Place Mall. Our beautiful bell choir played, several of our students sang and the Hope U dance department performed a wonderful dance to the music, 'Claire de Lune' which was played on the piano by Hope U student Howard Miller. Here are some photos of the students dancing. Christie Cook, Jason Rosales, Isela Elias-Calles and Marvin Castillo among others were stars for the day. We are very proud of all the performers on Saturday. It is amazing what these developmentally disabled adults can do!

Knitting at Hope

Here are two students, Tanette T. and Lori S. Both of them are knitting! They are both in the knitting classes at Hope University. Tanette has made a hat and a scarf. Lori has made several baby hats, washcloths and baby blankets. She has even knitted a baby sweater. "I just love to knit!" Says Lori S.

Fun At The Garden

Last July the students of Hope University went on a field trip to the Long Beach Community Gardens where two of the teachers have garden plots. We had the chance to plant some tomatoes and harvest fresh vegetables. Student Maria D. looks very happy in her sun hat at the garden. After that we went to the Nature Center for a walk. Student Christie C. is smiling because she saw some turtles in the water. It was a fun day.

Hope University 'Rings'

These are our beautiful bells. We are very proud of them. The Hope University bell choir loves to perform and is looking forward to the Very Special Arts performance on April 21st. Some of the songs we ring are 'America the Beautiful', Chopin's 'Improptu' and 'Moon River'. There are 20 students in our hand bell choir.
